GOOD LUCK!!!
Congratulations, Investigator. You solved The Orchard Incident.
The killer was Scott Matthews.
WHY SCOTT?
For more than thirty years, Scott Matthews carried a secret buried beneath the orchard. It was a secret that began with toxic chemicals, falsified reports, and the death of Lester Reed. Thirty years earlier, Reed discovered evidence that hazardous chemicals had been illegally dumped on orchard property. When he began asking questions, Peter Hastings stepped in to protect the secret. Lester Reed was later found dead on Thomas Calloway's property. Scott Matthews was there. He knew what happened, and for more than three decades he helped keep the truth buried.
THOMAS DISCOVERS THE TRUTH
Years later, Thomas Calloway unknowingly reopened the investigation. While digging a new irrigation ditch, he uncovered rusted barrels and detected the odor of chemicals buried beneath the orchard. Concerned by what he found, Thomas began reviewing old environmental reports. What he discovered was alarming. Inspection records had been altered, reports were missing, and signatures pointed back to former Agricultural Inspector Peter Hastings. The deeper Thomas dug, the closer he came to exposing everyone involved.
SCOTT HAD EVERYTHING TO LOSE
For more than thirty years, Scott believed the truth had been buried forever. Then Thomas started asking questions about the chemicals, the missing reports, and Lester Reed. If Thomas exposed the truth, investigators would uncover the chemical dumping operation, discover the falsified records, reopen the investigation into Lester Reed's death, and eventually uncover Scott Matthews' role in concealing what happened all those years ago. To Scott, Thomas Calloway had become a threat.
THE MURDER
The autopsy revealed that Thomas Calloway died from Paraquat poisoning. Investigators later located Paraquat inside the orchard equipment building, where Scott had direct access to the chemical. Phone records and text messages showed Scott becoming increasingly concerned about questions being asked regarding the orchard's past. One message revealed his true state of mind: "That should've stayed buried."
THE FINAL PIECES
Many people had motives. Julia Bennett wanted the land. Oliver wanted the investment. Marcus Reed wanted answers about his father's death. Brenda Calloway had argued with Thomas regarding the future of the orchard. However, only Scott Matthews possessed all three elements investigators look for in a murder case: motive, opportunity, and access to the murder weapon. During the orchard's anniversary celebration, Scott saw an opportunity he couldn't ignore. Knowing Thomas was getting dangerously close to uncovering the truth about the buried chemicals and the falsified records, Scott offered to get him a drink. While preparing it, Scott secretly added Paraquat to Thomas's beverage. Thomas unknowingly consumed the poison during the party. By the time the effects became apparent, Scott had already distanced himself from the act, hoping Thomas's death would permanently bury the secrets hidden beneath the orchard.
THE BIGGER TRUTH
Rosa Delgado eventually traced the falsified records to Peter Hastings, a former Kings County Agricultural Inspector responsible for concealing the chemical dumping operation decades earlier. When Rosa confronted Hastings in Las Vegas, he attacked her in an effort to silence her. The attack failed. Evidence gathered by Rosa connected Hastings to the murder of Lester Reed thirty years earlier, resulting in his arrest. For the first time in decades, the truth about Lester Reed's death finally came to light.
Thomas Calloway died because he refused to stop digging for the truth. Lester Reed died because he discovered it first. Scott Matthews killed to keep those secrets buried. Until now.
